Vladimir Putin had a working meeting with Gazprom´s CEO Alexei Miller

Particular attention was paid to the issues of gasification of the regions, as well as the Power of Siberia 2 project.

A working meeting took place on September 16, Alexey Miller briefed Vladimir Putin on the Gazprom’s preparations for the upcoming autumn/winter period. Particular attention was paid to the issues of gasification of the regions, as well as the Power of Siberia 2 project. The implementation of the Nord stream-2 project was not discussed.

By the beginning of the gas withdrawal period, the operational gas reserves in Russia’s UGS facilities will amount to 72.3 billion m3. Gazprom will pump nearly 9 billion m3 of gas into UGS facilities in Europe.


Gas supply and gasification programmes in the regions are among the company´s most important social projects. In 2020, Gazprom increased the volume of financing coming by more than 160 %. Gazprom’s investment will amount to RUB 56 billion, which is RUB 22 billion more than in 2019. 

A total of 2,350 km of gas pipelines will be constructed to supply gas to 319 towns and villages, and 410 boiler plants will be built. The country’s level of gasification will stand at 71.4 % at the end of the year. Gasification will be fully completed in 11 regions.


The 5-year plan provides for nearly tripling the amount of funding provided by Gazprom for gas supply and gasification programmes to RUB 526.1 billion. A total of 24,400 km of pipelines is to be built over these 5 years; 3,632 towns and villages will be connected to gas supply, and the gasification level will reach 74.7 %. In the next 5 years, by the end of 2025, another 24 Russian regions will have completed gasification, bringing the total to 35 Russian regions.


Alexei Miller noted that Gazprom's current output numbers are fully in line with the market demand and the macroeconomic situation in general. The company enjoys strong liquidity, high confidence and reliability in its operations. According Miller, the situation has got back to normal over the past several months.

In August, Gazprom supplied 5 % more gas to Russian consumers than in July, and exported 12 % more. If to compare gas supplies to non-CIS countries in August 2020 with August 2019, the volume of gas supplies exceeded 16.3 billion m3. Gazprom’s gas supplies to non-CIS countries in 2020 will be part of the top 5 all-time supply volumes.


Concerning the eastern project, Russia – Mongolia – China, Gazprom started front-end engineering and design for the Power of Siberia 2 and also started working on the Mongolian section.

During a videoconference with the Prime Minister of Mongolia, a memorandum of intent to create a special-purpose company was signed. The company is to conduct a feasibility study for this route and to choose the gas pipeline route. The results of this work will be discussed in the 1st quarter of 2021.

Once implemented, the Power of Siberia 2 project will allow to connect gas transmission capacities in the west with those in the east, Miller said.
